Nanoco Group has received $600,000 from a major Japanese electronics company in relation to the design and development of quantum dots - which are used in the LED backlighting of lcd televisions.
Quantum dots are fluorescent nano-sized particles of semiconductor material which have the ability to emit light in a specific colour dependent on the size of the particle.
Under the 18month development agreement, Nanoco says it has a final milestone remaining and is on schedule for completion in early 2011.
It expects a supply and licence agreement will then be negotiated with the partner.
Nanoco chief executive, Michael Edelman said: "The achievement of this milestone, which focused on longevity and optical performance of the quantum dot LED, provides further endorsement of our ability to design and supply bespoke quantum dots capable of being incorporated into robust consumer products."
Nanoco Technologies is unique in the nanomaterials market as a company that manufactures large quantities of quantum dots. Its molecular seeding process for the bespoke manufacture of these nanoparticles on a commercial scale is protected by worldwide patents. It focuses on customising the functionalisation of quantum dots, enabling chemical linkage for biological and other specific uses.
