Qualcomm has taken the wraps off its new Snapdragon 805 mobile processor, which it describes as its most powerful SoC yet.
The 'Ultra HD' device promises to bring 4K resolution video, images, and graphics to mobile devices and HDTVs, thanks to its new graphics engine.
According to Qualcomm, the Adreno 420 gpu provides the 805 with a 40% graphics boost over the original Snapdragon 800, while also including support for hardware tessellation and geometry shaders in an Adreno gpu for the first time.
The processor also features an ARM based Krait 450 quad core cpu - the first mobile cpu to run at speeds of up to 2.5GHz per core - and memory bandwidth support of up to 25.6GB/s.
"Using a smartphone or tablet powered by a Snapdragon 805 processor is like having an Ultra HD home theatre in your pocket, with 4K video, imaging and graphics, all built for mobile," said Qualcomm executive vice president Murthy Renduchintala.
The processor is sampling now and is expected to be available in commercial devices by the first half of 2014.
