ORing solutions save power and space
As part of a plan to create a higher profile for its technology, Picor – the Vicor subsidiary – has launched a range of ORing solutions targeted at redundant power architectures.
Carl Smith, Picor’s director of strategic marketing and business development, noted: “We’ve been developing power silicon for Vicor products, but we’re now trying to develop the Picor name. Customers have been buying Picor technology embedded in Vicor solutions and we’re looking to expand into active filters, power path management and, in the future, power conversion.”
The Cool-ORing family comprises four full function active ORing devices, as well as three discrete parts. All parts are said to ‘significantly outperform’ diode ORing and conventional active ORing devices, providing higher efficiency, lower power consumption and smaller packages.
Dynamic response is said to be typically within 160ns and power consumption can be just 10% that of diode ORing. Meanwhile, mosfet on state resistance is said to be 1.5mO. All parts have a master/slave feature, allowing paralleling for high current applications.
