Plastic Logic abandons launch of Que e-reader
Plastic Logic has announced it is abandoning plans to launch its long awaited Que e-reader. Despite investment of almost $200million, the company has been plagued by a series of delays, while competition has considerably risen for portable electronic displays.
The company's ceo, Richard Archuleta, believed 'it no longer made sense' to move forward with its first generation electronic reading device due to the dramatic changes in the market. "This was a hard decision," Archuleta said, "but is the best one for our company, our investors and our customers."
The e-reader was based on technology developed at Cambridge University in the 1980s and was intended to be the first demonstration of the potential of electronics printed onto plastic.
Archuleta confirmed that Plastic Logic will switch its focus to a successor to the Que, but did not give a timetable or further details of future products. "We plan to take the necessary time needed to re-enter the market as we refocus, redesign and retool for our next generation ProReader product," he said.
