PSS controller boosts power supply efficiency
An addition to CamSemi's C2160 family of primary side sensing (PSS) controllers is said to allow manufacturers of higher power embedded and multiple output power supplies to exploit the cost benefits of bipolar transistors.
The C2163 is aimed at universal input adapters and chargers rated at more than 8W. It delivers low standby power consumption and high efficiency power supplies in applications such as networking products and set-top boxes, but is also suited for tablet computer and power tool chargers.
The use of low power bipolar transistors is said to cut power supply system costs significantly without impacting performance. According to the company, a 12W adapter based on C2163 delivers an average efficiency in excess of 80% and a no load power consumption of less than 100mW, compared with the Energy Star 2.0 requirement of 300mW.
Featuring 'best in class' voltage and current regulation without board level trimming; programmable cable compensation of up to 10%; switching frequency adjustment; and quasiresonant switching to improve efficiency and reduce emi, the C2163PX2 is supplied in an SOT23-6 package.
