Flyback controller reduces cost, helps to meet power consumption regs

A primary side sensing (PSS) flyback controller from CamSemi is said to offer a significant reduction in system cost and component counts for higher power applications, as well as good light load and standby efficiency performance.
The C2183 is said to be suitable for universal input charger and adapter applications such as SOHO switches, routers and other networking products rated at more than 8W that require high performance voltage and current regulation. Other target applications include media tablets, set top boxes and power tools.
"We have launched CamSemi's new C2183 controller to further strengthen our position in the higher power universal charger and adapter market and to help manufacturers more easily comply with the latest industry standards on efficiency," said David Baillie, CamSemi's ceo. "At the same time, we have also incorporated some novel ways to significantly reduce system costs compared with competitive solutions."
According to the developer, the device's light load performance will enable manufacturers to more easily meet the 50% reduction in product standby power consumptions required by EC 1275/2008 tier two – as well as any increased efficiency requirements potentially resulting from the US Department of Energy's current rulemaking review. CamSemi's PSS controller also requires fewer and lower cost components elsewhere on the board and operates at up to 100kHz to further shrink product form factors.
