LiFi is high speed, bidirectional wireless communication of data via light. According to the team, by using LiFi-enabled LED light bulbs and a mobile device with a photo-detector, data can be securely transferred using light at much greater speeds and capacity than with Wi-Fi (which uses radio waves) as well as minimise the potential for interference. If deployed on an aircraft, this could empower passengers to download an HD video in just a few seconds, for example.
