Renesas Electronics has extended its RL78 series with the addition of the RL78/G14 group of 16bit mcus. The devices feature advanced on-chip peripheral functions, enhanced real time control capabilities and are said to deliver excellent processor performance.
The microcontrollers integrate a data transfer controller and an event link controller, as well as advanced timer modules. According to Renesas, these help to boost system performance and achieve 70uA/MHz at 32MHz. Additional features include an 8bit d/a converter and comparator, additional cpu instructions and on-chip debugging functions.
The mcus are available in flash rom capacities ranging from 16 to 256KB, ram capacities from 2.5 to 24KB, and a total of 17 package configurations. They come with pin counts from 30 to 100 pins and are suitable for a range of office equipment and industrial automation systems, as well as medical and consumer products. According to Renesas, engineers can select the memory capacity and package type that best matches their system requirements to optimise board size, achieve more compact systems and reduce cost.
"In addition to the low power process technology, the new RL78/G14 devices incorporate a number of versatile peripherals to enable innovative, low cost embedded designs," said Mohammed Dogar, product marketing manager, Industrial and Distribution business unit, Renesas. "The mcus' excellent timer peripherals - combined with 5V support, advanced hardware based safety features such as ram parity check and CRC - make the RL78/G14 devices ideal for higher efficiency household appliances."
To minimise development time, the devices maintain compatibility with Renesas' existing R8C and 78K mcus, allowing developers to re use some of their legacy code.
