Signed up for ITAR
The International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) may have wider impact than anticipated, says Howard Venning, MD of Aspen Electronics.
Venning said ITAR has become a daily discussion point amongst suppliers of high tech components to the UK defence market.
"There is constant debate as to whether the end use or end user is 'military' and therefore whether the act of supplying your customer could be classified as 'brokering a defence article', which is how ITAR describes such a process."
To ensure it remains in compliance with ITAR, Aspen has gained registered broker status. Venning said: "According to our interpretation, we would be breaking US laws if we didn't. There was no way we wanted to find ourselves on the wrong side of the law."
