SUNY plans three 450mm fabs in $45bn investment
The State University of New York's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (SUNY CNSE) has announced plans to build up to three 450mm fabs, each requiring an investment of up to $15billion and each featuring 450,000ft2 of clean room space.
The announcement sees CNSE broaden its partnership with the Mohawk Valley economic development body EDGE and SUNY Institute of Technology beyond establishment of the Global 450mm Consortium (G450C) at CNSE. G450C has brought together Intel, IBM, Globalfoundries, TSMC and Samsung to develop technology for manufacture of semiconductors on 450mm wafers.
If the plan comes to fruition, the site will feature up to 8.25m ft2 of facilities and up to three 450mm fabs. The plan will need an investmehnt of up to $45bn, but will create 5000 direct jobs and 15,000 indirect jobs.
