Thales UK has announced the launch of the second Thales Scottish Technology Prize. This year, the company is looking for creative and innovative ideas in the areas of data and image processing and associated applications.
The purpose of the competition is to strengthen links between Thales and the Scottish academic community and to identify opportunities for collaborative working.
The competition – open to all staff and students registered at Scottish universities – carries a first prize of £25,000 to support the winner's research, as well as smaller personal cash prizes for the winner and finalists. Winner and finalists will be announced at a prize giving ceremony on 10 December.
In last year's competition, which focused on laser technologies, the University of Strathclyde secured first prize. Since then, Thales has pursued three of the winning ideas and plans to agree on funded projects that will bring their ideas into reality.
Nicholas Smart, pictured, a BSc physics student at Aberdeen University, won £1000 for the best undergraduate entry in 2008.
David Lockwood, managing director of Thales UK's optronics facility in Glasgow, is confident that the Thales Scottish technology competition will develop into an annual tradition: "As a provider of leading edge technology used in mission critical equipment, we need to work closely with the academic community to ensure our products continue to provide our customers with the best solutions. This competition illustrates our ongoing commitment to supporting research and development activities."
