Ubiquisys to partner with Intel on 'intelligent' small cells
UK femtocell firm Ubiquisys has announced a strategic agreement with Intel to develop intelligent basestation (BTS) computing platforms based on Intel architecture.
The Swindon based company will collaborate with the chip giant on the development of a new range of dual mode 3G/LTE small cells, based around its application software running on Atom and Xeon processors.
Ubiquisys' ceo Chris Gilbert (pictured) claims the collaboration will offer 'new levels' of processing power and create a cloud of IP enabled compute engines much closer to mobile users. Reference designs are expected to be made available to equipment manufacturers in 2012.
"This is the future of small cells," Gilbert asserted. "Not just miniature base stations but powerful computing platforms bringing the IP cloud as close as possible to mobile users and machines. We're delighted to be working with Intel, a leader in processing technology for the new IP communications cloud."
