3A output dc/dc converter offers low noise operation and extended run time

Linear Technology has unveiled the LTC3113, a synchronous buck boost converter that is said to deliver 3A of output current from a nominal 3.3V power source, Li-Ion/Polymer battery or up to 1A from dual cell alkaline/NiCad/NiMH batteries.
The device's 1.8 to 5.5V input range and 1.8 to 5.5V output range have been implemented to provide a regulated output from an input voltage above, below or equal to the output.
The converter is said to be an ideal regulator solution to maximise the energy available from a two supercapacitor stack. The proprietary buck boost topology incorporated in the LTC3113 has been designed to deliver a continuous transition through all operating modes. According to Linear, this makes it suitable for applications that have to maintain a constant, low noise output voltage, even as the input voltage declines below the output.
The converter's constant switching frequency is user programmable from 300kHz up to 2MHz in order to optimise the balance between efficiency and external component size. It includes two N and two P channel mosfets to deliver efficiencies of up to 96%.
