Buck boost dc/dc converter offers extended battery life
1 min read
A new synchronous buck boost converter has been unveiled by Linear Technology. The LTC3536 is designed to deliver up to 1A of output current from a Li-Ion/Polymer source or 300mA from dual cell alkaline/NiCd/NiMH sources.
The converter has a 1.8 to 5.5V input and output voltage range and is designed to achieve a +/-1% accurate output with inputs above, below or equal to the regulated output. It incorporates the latest generation single inductor pwm topology and is said to provide a continuous transition through all of the operating modes.
Targeted at noise sensitive applications that require a constant output voltage, Linear claims the LTC3536 can increase battery run time by 25% compared to buck regulators. Its switching frequency is user programmable from 300kHz to 2MHz and can be synchronised to a system clock. Housed in a 3 x 3mm DFN package, features include 1% output voltage accuracy, low noise, soft start, short circuit protection, current limiting and thermal shutdown.
Two N channel mosfets and two P channel mosfets (RDS(ON) of 0.06 and 0.08Ohm have been implemented to deliver efficiencies of up to 95%. Burst Mode operation is user programmed to improve efficiency at light loads and requires 28uA of quiescent current. Shutdown current is rated at 1uA.
