Analogue amp promises clearer sound in cars
STMicroelectronics' TDA7802 is said to be the first automotive start/stop compatible audio power amplifier to combine the performance and cost benefits of a digital input with the simplicity and efficiency of analogue class SB-I amplification.
The chip is designed to operate even when its supply voltage drops as the engine restarts. Its digital input connects directly to a digital sound processor, saving digital/analogue converter and low pass filter components.
ST claims the TDA7802 can reach 50% lower heat dissipation than a class AB analogue amplifier, allowing smaller heatsinks or extra functionality in the head unit within the same thermal budget.
The device delivers 4 x 50W into 4? speakers and can drive loads as low as 1?. It is also capable of achieving an SNR of 115dB, and more than 110dB dynamic range.
Built in diagnostics protect against short circuit failures or speaker disconnection.
