Maxim's latest battery charger IC integrates dual Quick-PWM step down controllers to deliver what it claims to be the most compact power solution for notebooks, UMPCs, MIDs, and other portable applications.
Maxim Integrated Products has announced the MAX17085B, an integrated power solution designed to combine a multichemistry battery charger with dual Quick-PWM step-down controllers.
This integration is designed to save board space and reduce component cost by eliminating the need for separate ICs. The battery charger's switching frequency is rated for operation up to 1.2MHz to allow the use of smaller inductors. Dual SMPSs with dual keep-alive linear regulators supply system power in the off, standby, and alive states.
The device is suitable for notebooks, UMPCs, MIDs, and other portable applications in which space and component cost are critical.
The charge-voltage setting is adjustable and accurate to +/-0.4%. The charge current is also adjustable by an analogue or PWM input. Internal 5V/100mA and 3.3V/50mA LDOs generate always-on power supplies, while overvoltage, undervoltage, thermal, and other fault-protection features are also included.
The MAX17085B is available in a 5 x 5mm, 40pin TQFN package with an exposed pad and is fully specified over the -40 to 105°C temperature range.
