Security sensors produced in paper packages

Looking to meet the needs of logistics companies and the retail sector for new ways to protect shipments, prevent forgeries and ensure that products remain unspoiled during transportation, the ROPAS project has developed a paper based electronic security tag.

Developed by Finnish company VTT in association with a number of partners, the tag has an embedded battery and two LEDS, which show whether the shipment has been opened or tampered with.

Previously, electronics have only been integrated into plastic labels. However, the ROPAS project – Roll to Paper Sensors – has shown that electronics can be integrated into paper based tags and manufactured on a roll to roll process. According to ROPAS – a four year project which received €4.7million of EU funding – its approach will enable cost effective mass production of environmentally friendly tags.
