Single cell battery charger for auto applications
Intersil has announced the ISL78692, a 4.1V single cell battery charger designed to extend the life of Li-ion batteries in automotive emergency call systems.
The ISL78692 battery charger has a lower leakage current – said to be 3µA – than competing solutions, allowing the backup battery to remain charged for a longer period. Lower charging voltage also extends battery life, whilst the device's small footprint reduces total solution size.
The ISL78692 requires only five external components to program the charging current of up to 1A and features a charge current thermal foldback feature that prevents overheating by reducing the battery charging current automatically. Alongside an integrated power transistor and current sensor, an NTC thermistor shuts the charger when the temperature is out of range.
Suitable for use in temperatures ranging from -40 to 85C and qualified to AEC-Q100, the device is supplied in a 10pin DFN package measuring 3 x 3mm.
