Himag's custom-design planar transformers and inductors provide very high-efficiency, in a lightweight compact form-factor, for all high-frequency power supplies. Sectors such as automotive (inc. F1) are adopting match-box size transformers in the 500W-2kW power range, whilst railway applications are gaining significant benefits from Himag's new 70kW single-component transformer that is smaller than a ream of paper.
Himag Planar Magnetics is a Global leader of planar transformer and inductor technology, supplying a wide range of innovative custom-design magnetics (conventional and planar) offering high-efficiency, lightweight, compact transformers and inductors. Sectors include: automotive, renewables (solar/wind), data servers, defence, aerospace, communications and medical.
Himag's Engineering team have developed single-component transformers from 35W to 70kW, and up to 20kV, including integrated transformer/inductor single-components and bespoke SMPS with integrated magnetics. Himag has over 25 years R&D experience, with manufacturing locations in Europe, USA, Middle and Far East, offering a global reach.
Himag provides a full-cycle service, custom-design through to volume manufacture, of high-frequency magnetics (planar and conventional). Planar transformers can be used as a direct replacement for conventional wire-wound transformers in high-frequency power electronics applications, with typical switching frequencies of 20kHz – 800kHz. Typically a planar transformer is >99% efficient, and around 30% of the volume and weight of its conventional wire-wound equivalent.
Planar transformers are important to the future of any electronic product requiring a high frequency switch mode power supply. The main advantages of planar transformers over their conventional counterparts are as follows:
• Improved Efficiency
• Low Profile
• Low Weight
• Low Leakage Inductance
• Highly Efficient Cooling
• Very Repeatable
• Multiple Topologies
• Dimensional Accuracy
• Multiple Windings Options
Dean Curran, Vice-President, said: 'As switching frequencies increase year on year, we are seeing more and more sectors adopting planar transformer technology. In particular, the newer technologies such as renewable energy and HEV automotive are recognising the huge efficiency benefits that planar magnetics provide. When you consider that this higher efficiency is achieved in a smaller, lighter component than the conventional technology, it is only a matter of time before everyone is using planar transformers and inductors'.
