Altera has begun shipping what it claims to be the world's first fpga featuring 28Gb/s transceivers. The new device is part of the company's Stratix V GT series and is said to offer increased performance and reduced power in high bandwidth communications applications.

"By leveraging a tailored 28nm technology approach that includes the highest performance process and most advanced transceiver technology, we enable customers to deliver the breakthrough bandwidth they need to bring the most cutting edge systems to market," said Patrick Dorsey, senior director of product marketing at Altera. "No other fpga currently shipping in the industry delivers the bandwidth and power efficiency that Stratix V GT fpgas provide." The new device is designed to support backplane, optical module and chip to chip applications through four 28Gb/s transceivers, 32 full duplex, 12.5Gb/s transceivers, and up to 4 x 72bit DIMM ddr3 memory interfaces supporting 2133Mb/s. It meets the CEI-28G specification and is said to consume 200mW per channel As well as 40/100G applications, the fpga is targeted at high end communications systems, high end test equipment and military communications systems. It features up to 622k logic elements, 512 18x18 multipliers, hardened PCI Express, 10Gb/s Ethernet and supports the latest high speed serial protocols.
