Apple buys 3d motion sensor start up
Apple has confirmed its acquisition over PrimeSense, the Israeli start up best known for developing gesture control for Microsoft's Kinect sensor.
The deal, estimated at between $300 and $360million, has sparked speculation that Apple is planning to develop its own motion sensing device, with rumours centred on some form of gesture control for the highly anticipated Apple TV.
The news comes after Apple was awarded more than $290million as part of an ongoing patent dispute with Samsung regarding technology used in iPhones and iPads.
A Silicon Valley jury ruled last week that Samsung had infringed 13 Apple patents, including one that allows users to 'pinch and zoom' on smartphone and tablet screens. The company is expected to appeal.
"For Apple, this case has always been about more than patents and money," Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said in a statement. "It has been about innovation and the hard work that goes into inventing products that people love."
