EEPROM memory has ultra fast write time of 1ms
STMicroelectronics has introduced a new 32Kbit EEPROM memory module that is capable of storing 2Kbits of data in less than 1ms.
Designed for storing important data during unexpected events, such as sudden power failures, the M35B32 is claimed to be 40x faster than standard 32Kbit EEPROM devices. ST says it can match the write speed of flash, while consuming 10x less energy.
The device is optimised to allow designers to specify a voltage supply backup capacitor of one tenth the size needed to operate the memory long enough to finish writing if system power is lost unexpectedly.
It can be used in black box recorders to help identify the causes of equipment failures or accidents. Other applications include games, battery powered gadgets, utility meters, smart grid equipment, industrial systems and medical devices.
