Intel shows 32nm test chips
Intel’s president Paul Otellini has shown the industry’s first working chips built on a 32nm process. According to the company, devices based on the 32nm technology are set to enter production in 2009.
Intel’s 32nm test chips feature logic and sram, accommodating more than 1.9billion transistors. The process uses the company’s second generation high k and metal gate transistor technology.
Meanwhile, Intel expects to launch its Penryn processor in November. It will be the first high volume 45nm device with the low power consumption and high performance needed to meet a variety of computing needs. Intel plans to introduce 15 45nm processors by the end of the year and another 20 in the first quarter of 2008.
“We expect our Penryn processors to provide up to a 20% performance increase while improving energy efficiency,” said Otellini.
