IP core specialist unveils world's fastest 8051 cpu
An IP core provider and SoC design house claims to have developed the world's fastest 8051 cpu, with up to 56.8 times the processing power of the original 8051 at the same clock frequency.
Digital Core Design says the DQ80251 is significantly more efficient than any other solution available, following independent tests carried out on Dhrystone 2.1 benchmark program.
The device is quad pipelined and runs at 300MHz and, according to the company's vice president, Thomas Krzyzak, to attain an equivalent performance from the original 8051, speeds of 17,000MHz would need to be clocked. The core is designed to provide up to 0.54311 DMIPS/MHz (VAX MIPS) and uses 14,500 asic gates. The DQ80251 family has been designed to provide efficient real time JTAG based DoCD debugging and is user configurable.
The range is available in VERILOG source code, VHDL source code and fpga Netlist formats.
