The Apple iPad 3 will officially be launched on 16 March, boasting a Retina display and 1.5GHz dual core A5X chip with quad core graphics processing.
According to Apple, the A5X gpu is twice as powerful as the A5 found in the iPad 2 and four times more powerful than NVIDIA's Tegra 3 chipset.
The tablet is 9.4mm thick and 1.14Ibs - almost 1mm thicker than the iPad 2 – and has a 2048x1536p resolution with 264 pixels per inch. It will follow a similar pricing structure to its predecessor, with prices starting from £399.
Apple chief executive Tim Cook made the announcement last night in San Francisco, adding that the iPad 3 will not incorporate the Siri voice commanded personal assistant that it incorporated into the iPhone 4S, but instead host voice dictation features enabling users to transcribe letters.
For US users the tablet will also provide 4G LTE internet connectivity that could deliver a speed increase of up to five times that of current networks.
Cook said: ""We think that iPad is the poster child of the post pc world. The momentum behind Apple has been incredible and has surprised almost everyone. We sold 15.4million in the last quarter alone. We sold more iPads in the fourth quarter of last year than any pc manufacturer sold of their entire pc line worldwide."
Multiple models will be available with storage variants of 16, 32 and 64GB.
