Layerscape to provide ‘flexibility and scalability’
Another announcement from Freescale's Technology Forum in the US is the Layerscape system architecture. Said to be a core agnostic, software aware framework, Layerscape has been developed to address the flexibility and scalability required by network infrastructure.
"To address the need for more intelligent, dynamic networks, Freescale has taken the QorIQ platform a significant step further," said Tom Deitrich, general manager of Freescale?s Networking and Multimedia Solutions Group. "We've made software awareness an integral part of our new architecture, instead of an afterthought."
The first two QorIQ product families based on the Layerscape architecture are the LS-1 and LS-2. The LS-1 family features two ARM Cortex-A7 cores running at up to 1.2GHz, with a power consumption of less than 3W. The LS-2 family features two ARM Cortex-A15 cores running at up to 1.5GHz and consumes less than 5W.
While these two ranges are ARM based, Freescale says future devices will feature the Power Architecture e6500 core.
