MMICs operate at 94GHz

Irish RF specialist Arralis has launched integrated transmit and receive chips that operate at 94GHz. The move is said to make the ‘highly desirable’ 94GHz attenuation window available for commercial applications.

Mike Gleaves, CTO, said: “Our focus is scale and integration, which means easier system development and lower cost. These transmit and receive chips deliver both.”

Arralis says 94GHz has been used almost exclusively in military radar, but adds the spectrum from 90 to 100GHz is attractive, due to small system size, high resolution and long range. Potential applications include 5G, ‘mega constellations’, drones, driverless vehicles and the IoT.

The PHEMT GaAs devices measure 5.2 x 2.2mm and can function as up- and down-converters. The up converter, which consists of a mixer with integrated medium power amplifier, offers an output power of more than 13dBm. The down converter, comprising a low noise amplifier and a mixer, has a gain of more than 10dB.
