Mono TFT to displace LCDs?
Varitronix has launched a monochrome TFT display which it believes will find application in automotive and industrial displays. It says the screen maintains the same characteristics as a full colour TFT – wide viewing angles, fast refresh and a wide temperature operating range – but claims better sunlight readability. It adds that the screen is easier to drive than a full colour device and can replace existing lcds.

Mike Burke, general manager of Varitronix UK’s TFT division, claimed the introduction would result in a lower cost solution for auto display developers and manufacturers. “We have produced a 2.8in quarter VGA demonstration unit with a contrast ratio of 1000:1 and are working on a 3.5in variant.”
