New research and development centre for ARM?
ARM Holdings is considering setting up its first Asian-Pacific research and development centre to accelerate development in the region with better software resources.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the chip design company's plan comes in response to rival Intel's partnership with Nokia to jointly develop the MeeGo operating system.
ARM's president, Tudor Brown (pictured), told the newspaper he believed that an Asian-Pacific R&D centre would help accelerate localised software on hardware but the company won't run an application store. The company currently has 10 R&D centres around the world.
According to the report, ARM also plans to boost its headcount by 150 to 1850 this year, primarily hiring engineers. Brown sees opportunities in connected computing devices such as smartphones and televisions with internet capability.
