NXP 6Mhz dc/dc converters are 95% efficient

NXP has announced a new 6MHz dc/dc switching regulator family with an output voltage ripple of 7mV and up to 95% efficiency.
The DC6M family is designed to support up to 650mA supply current in a WLCSP6 package measuring 1.36 x 0.96 x 0.47mm. With an input voltage range from 2.3 to 5.5V, the converters are suitable for battery driven portable devices such as smartphones and other consumer devices.
"Providing best in class performance in a very flat package, our DC6M step down regulators open exciting new possibilities for engineers in designing sub systems with higher efficiency, cleaner signals and much smaller footprint – whether they use the DC6M as a standalone or in combination with LDOs," said international product marketing manager Frank Hildebrandt at NXP.
With the typical output voltage ripple of 7mV, the DC6M family is said to minimise disturbances to the output voltage signal caused by the switching mechanism. A switching frequency of 6MHz allows the usage of SMD inductors as small as 470nH in a flat 0805 package size, which NXP says can further reduce space required by the design.
