Renesas releases 32 16bit mcus with on chip flash memory

A series of 32 16bit microcontrollers incorporating an on chip flash memory and lcd driver has been unveiled by Renesas Technology. The R8C/Lx series of devices has been designed for use in a range of lcd panel equipped applications such as industrial and consumer products, as well as battery operated healthcare devices.
The initial release phase comprises 32 models in eight groups. These incorporate on chip flash memory of up to 128kbytes and, according to Renesas, offer higher performance, low power consumption and enhanced peripheral functions.
The flash memory features 1.8V low voltage operation, while the lcd driver incorporates a constant voltage generation circuit, designed to eliminate the need for an external power supply. A specified pixel flashing function previously only provided in dot matrix lcds is also included, which Renesas says enables the new microcontrollers to be used for applications such as battery operated devices requiring low power consumption and low voltage operation.
A newly integrated power supply control circuit operates with an ultra-low power consumption mode (power off mode), which Renesas says allows users to achieve current consumptions as low as 20nA in power off mode 0 and 1.3µA in power off mode 1 (with RTC active).
Renesas' proprietary flash memory, Data flash has been used in the new series and includes a background operation function designed to enable the cpu to execute instructions during data flash writing/erasing. Data flash capacity has been doubled to a total of 4Kbytes compared with the company's previous products.
