Single interface takes new approach to design solutions

The element 14 Knode features access to engineering information, tools, designs, hardware and services – and is integrated with the company's community forum. Established to support the complete design flow from concept to final production, Farnell says it enables engineers to research, design, develop and prototype manufacture in a single environment. The site is broken down into six zones covering development platforms; operating systems and stacks; development tools; CAD tools; pcb services and test and measurement. Chris Sullivan, global head of solutions marketing at Farnell, said the Knode had been specifically created for embedded hardware and embedded software engineers. "Engineers face increasingly complex design issues as technology becomes more integrated," he said. "Previously, they would have to visit multiple sites to gather relevant information and to begin assembling the correct hardware and software solutions for their design. The Knode provides a service across the whole design flow. Based on the user's initial specification, it automates the creation of explicit dependencies and interrelationships with other system level components to quickly build a custom design flow - whether it be development kits, design tools, operating systems and stacks, IP or services such as pcb design and manufacture." According to Sullivan, the site is part of Farnell's drive to provide online component solutions, while bringing in a community. "There has been thunderous investment in development in order to get the service ready. And we have a clear roadmap for future advancements, such as smart phone functionality."
