UK is Europe’s ic design leader

The UK is home to 31.9% of the chipless, fabless and ic design companies in Europe, says market researcher Future Horizons. This represents more than three times the number of such companies in any other European region. Israel, included in the report, is home to 15.5% of such operations.

According to the company’s recently published European Fabless Semiconductor Report, the number of independent chipless, fabless and ic design houses in Europe continues to rise, despite a number of acquisitions in this sector. Figures in the report claim the number of these startups in 2006 increased by almost 4% compared to 2005. “The UK’s position is no surprise,” said Chris Ryan, semiconductor industry analyst with Future Horizons, “and Israel has always been a source of new company generation. But Germany and France, despite their size, lag behind the leading two by some margin.” Ryan said the report finds that Greece and Switzerland have seen the largest percentage growth in new design companies in the period.
