UKEA continues fight against counterfeit components

As part of its strategy to help companies address the growing threat of counterfeits in the electronics supply chain and following the success of its first two seminars, the UK Electronics Alliance (UKEA) has announced it will hold a third seminar at 1VS Conference Centre, London, on Tuesday 3 April.
According to the UKEA, the event will put an emphasis on providing practical help and advice and build on its previous seminars by providing an update of the work being undertaken by various groups to combat this threat.
The seminar will provide delegates with ways to access information and support to reduce the risk to their businesses. A number of the UK's leading experts will be speaking also provide the latest information on the threat and the development of best practice.
The UKEA warns that counterfeits are becoming more sophisticated and difficult to detect while initiatives continue to develop to combat the treat and a recent survey conducted by organisation revealed that there is still work to be done to raise awareness of best practice in dealing with counterfeits. 47% of shipments of counterfeits cited in the survey were returned to the supplier for credit, not only returning them into the supply chain but also, probably innocently, committing a criminal offence by 'trading' in counterfeits. Meanwhile, only 11% of incidents were reported to the police or Trading Standards and only 50% of companies who had been victims of counterfeiting have revised their policies and procedures to minimise the risk of further counterfeits in the future.
The seminar is scheduled to run from 10.00am to 4.00pm with breaks for refreshments and a buffet lunch and will include presentations providing information on: Work being undertaken by component manufacturers and distributors to combat counterfeits; current and emerging product and packaging security technologies and how they can be used in the electronic component supply chain; international standards for the electronics industry that are being developed and currently available to enable a common approach to the problem; advice on counterfeit components and the law; and recent trends and an overview of how to access further information, much of it free of charge.
So far, speakers have been confirmed from or representing ECSN, ESIA, the Intellectual Property Office, IEC, the Product and Image Security Foundation, SAE International and the UK Electronics Alliance.
