VCSEL driver ic deals with data rates of up to 40Gbit/s

VI Systems has launched an ultra-high speed vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) driver ic, which has been designed for data rates of up to 40Gbit/s in short reach optical communication systems.

According to the optoelectronic specialist, the new device is the first generation of ultra-high speed and low power drivers for directly modulated VCSELs. The A40-150C80 is designed to modulate VCSEL with very high frequencies and enable 'ultra high-speed' data transmission over a 50/125um multi mode fibre. The A40-150C driver ic is designed for current modulation of the VCSEL device. The supply voltage is specified with 3.3V and the dimensions are 800 x 600µm. Target applications are short reach optical receivers and transceiver modules used in optical communication networks and optical interconnects in the computer industry. The A40-150C chip is available as engineering sample in die form.
