32bit mcus offers scalable lineup for portable consumer and industrial devices

Renesas Electronics has expanded its RX200 series of low power mid range microcontrollers to include the RX220 group of entry level devices.
Based on the RX cpu core, the new range is designed to provide greater scalability for embedded designers moving from 8 and 16bit to 32bit applications. It is targeted at consumer and industrial applications, including smartphones, digital cameras, industrial equipment and measuring devices.
The mcus are said to achieve a processing performance of approximately 50DMIPS at 32MHz, while maintaining low power consumption. According to Renesas, power consumption is reduced to less than half that of the earlier RX200 series when operating in the low frequency range down to 8MHz.
The devices also feature enhanced safety functions, including a clock frequency accuracy measurement circuit that detects any rise or fall in the clock frequency, and support an operating voltage range between 1.62 and 5.5V.
Other features include an oscillator oscillation stop detection circuit, a data operation circuit that assists in ram error testing and a cyclic redundancy check function for detecting communication errors.
