GaN-on-Si LEDs cut mounting area by 90%
Measuring just 0.65 x 0.65mm, Toshiba's TL1WK family of white LEDs is designed to reduce mounting area by 90% compared to competing solutions.
The devices can be used for general lighting, including straight tube lights, light bulbs and ceiling lights.
They utilise gallium nitride-on-silicon (GaN-on-Si) process technology and a new process technology that fabricates the elements of a packaged LED on an 8in silicon wafer.
The LEDs are claimed to be the industry's smallest in sub-watt class (0.25 to 0.5W). Toshiba says they achieve a luminous efficacy of 130lm/W and superior heat dissipation. Forward current is up to 180mA.
The first device to be released from the range has a colour temperature of 5000K and a colour rendering index Ra of 80. Other colour temperature variations, including 4000, 3000 and 2700K, are currently under development.
