MIPS unveils multiprocessor core
MIPS Technologies has launched what it claims is the first multithreaded, multiprocessor licensable core targeted at embedded systems applications.
The MIPS32 1004K is a coherent processing system with up to four single or multi-threaded processors. The introduction follows the launch last year of the MIPS32 74K core, a single threaded core capable of running at more than 1GHz.
“With our multicore solution, MIPS offers designers two paths to higher performance: the 74K core for the fastest, single threaded application; or the 1004K core for coherent multiprocessing scalable to even higher levels of performance,” said John Derrick, president and general manager of MIPS’ processor business group, pictured.
Two initial versions of the 1004K core family will be available this quarter: the MIPS32 1004Kc, which provides a coherent processing system using base integer cores, and the MIPS32 1004Kf, which uses integer cores plus floating point units.
