Samsung invests $3.6billion into chip plant
Memory chipmaker, Samsung Electronics, has announced plans to expand the production capacity of its US plant with a $3.6billion investment.
The added capacity of the chip plant, based in Austin, Texas, will be used to produce devices for large scale integration chips.
The expansion follows the announcement of Samsung's $14.4bn investment plan this year to capitalise on the demand boom and widen the technology gap with second tier manufacturers.
Samsung Austin Semiconductor primarily produces nand flash memory chips used in mobile phones and digital cameras. As a result of the expansion, Samsung says it will hire an additional 500 employees at the site.
