TDK-Lambda UK, a world-leading power supply manufacturer, has developed a new series of 'green' power supplies that comply with the energy saving requirements of Energy Star and the ErP (Energy related Products) Directive. The 250W GWS series AC-DC power supply uses innovative design techniques to combine high efficiency, high power density and low standby power with the confidence of a five-year warranty.
Designed with a 105x199mm footprint and 1U height, the GWS250 is compact and convection cooled product fitting into spaces previously requiring a fan cooled model. Rated at 250W the power supply is offered in four models with nominal outputs of 12V (21A), 24V (10.5A), 36V (7A) and 48V (5.3A). Outputs are user adjusted by up to 20% depending on model type – and the 24V and 36V models have a peak power rating of 300W. With a flat efficiency curve averaging at 93%, from 25 to 100% current output, the GWS250 range can be operated from -25 to 50°C at ambient temperature under full load conditions, and up to +70°C with suitable derating.
The GWS250 series from TDK-Lambda has overvoltage, overtemperature and overcurrent protection (constant current mode for 24V, 36V and 48V models, other voltages are in hiccup mode). Models in the GWS250 series also feature a sub-0.5W standby power, 5V/0.3A standby output, remote on/off, DC GOOD signal and a voltage programming function as standard.
CE marked in accordance with the LV Directive, the GWS250 carries a host of environmental and safety approvals including EN55022 and FCC Class B, UL60950-1, CSA C22.2 No.60950-1-07 (cUL), EN60950-1 edition 2 and IEC60950-1. Meeting future ErP requirements today
"As of November last year, the Eco-Design Directive EuP was replaced with the new ErP (Energy-related Products) Directive 2009/125/EC," explains Martin Southam, Marketing Director of TDK-Lambda EMEA. One of the first implementing measures under the ErP Directive to be enforced is for standby/off mode power consumption. Initially, this value is set so that it should not exceed 1W however it is expected to drop to 0.5W by January 2013. "More and more of our end system customers are asking for low standby power consumption – even when their own equipment does not fall within the scope of ErP today we find that there is a real desire to produce environmentally responsible products," adds Southam. "With this in mind, TDK-Lambda designed the GWS series with a standby mode that remains below 0.5W, helping designers achieve those regulations easily and ensuring that end systems are future-proofed beyond January 2013."
